A Winnipeg school was in lockdown Thursday afternoon after police surrounded a house in the North End.

The tactical support team swept in and surrounded the home in the 700 block of Flora Avenue just before noon after a man was spotted with a gun in the area.

Neighbours told CBC News the house is abandoned but is often used as a hangout by teenagers.

At about 4 p.m., the prolonged standoff came to a quiet conclusion when some of the officers entered the residence and found no one inside. The school was then notified the lockdown could be lifted.

The school was Immaculate Heart of Mary, a kindergarten to Grade 8 Ukrainian Catholic school at 650 Flora Ave.
