The fate of vacant downtown parcel of land is close to being decided and students at a nearby high school have their fingers crossed.

Gordon Bell students have rallied for the space — a former car dealership at Portage and Broadway avenues — on a number of occasions, even marching to the steps of the legislature.

Canada Post bought the lot to turn it into a letter-sorting depot. Gordon Bell administrators and students have been hoping to turn the land into a much-needed playing field for the school.

On Thursday, a representative with Canada Post told CBC News the corporation has been looking at other potential sites, but it has not revealed where.

Both the provincial government and representatives from the federal government confirmed negotiations are underway for a potential location elsewhere in the city and "are at a delicate stage."

More details on a deal will be available Friday, a Canada Post spokesperson said.
