A leading edge, cold weather testing facility is being built near Thompson, Man.

The Canadian Environmental Test Research and Education Centre will test jet engines for the world's aviation industry.

The Manitoba and federal governments are investing more than $22 million towards the facility, a joint venture by Rolls-Royce Canada Ltd. and Pratt & Whitney.

Thompson Mayor Tim Johnston says he believes the facility will inspire young northerners to get high-tech jobs.

"It makes the world hopefully a smaller place for our youth, that they can see themselves working or training or gaining the education to work in an industry that is worldwide. And I have confidence that we'll see university programs offered that may provide some training."

Thompson is the site of cold-weather testing for several industries.

Johnston said the northern Manitoba city of over 13,000 people, located about 750 kilometres north of Winnipeg, was chosen out of 50 other communities for the test facility partly because of affordable hydroelectricity rates.
