Sudden flooding from an ice jam forced 85 people from their homes in Riverton, Man., Thursday.

The jam on the Icelandic River collided with a heavy pack of ice at Lake Winnipeg in the early hours of Thursday morning. That prompted river water to back up and flood into the community, about 130 kilometres north of Winnipeg on the lake's western shore.

An Amphibex ice-breaker was sent to the scene, but the ice jam broke up on its own and the water levels dropped as quickly as they had risen.
