An inmate from the Headingley Correctional Centre was sent to hospital in critical condition after a violent jailhouse assault on Tuesday night.

His status was later upgraded to stable condition at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, but he is still suffering from life-threatening injuries, said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Line Karpish.

"At this point in time, there is the possibility this may be a homicide or may turn into a homicide and we are treating the matter as such," she said.

The Headingley RCMP detachment received a call from the provincial jail around 8:30 p.m.

Police would only say another inmate assaulted the man. There were no details about weapons used, gang affiliations, or what exactly happened.

"Within an institution, there are all kind of individuals; some of them are violent in nature. So does it come as a surprise? No, it doesn't," said Karpish. "And does it happen from time to time? Perhaps not to this extent. This is a serious assault."

The name of the injured man and a suspect are not being released at this time.

The investigation is continuing with members from the RCMP Winnipeg serious crime and major crime units assisting Headingley RCMP.
