A generous father bought his daughter the winning ticket in the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation's 2009 MegaMillion Lotto.

Melanie Chaput, 29, had her name drawn from the drum Wednesday and is now $1 million richer. Chaput, who works at St. Boniface Hospital as an X-ray and CT technologist, was given the ticket by her dad, Roger.

"Amazing. It hasn't sunk in yet," said Chaput. "It's my parents, obviously, [who are responsible for the luck]. It's nice to think I can take care of them."

Lottery officials said hospital employees are not prevented from participating in the draw, which raised $4 million for the foundation.

Of that, $1 million goes to the winner and $2 million goes to the hospital. The remaining $1 million is used to pay for the prizes, which included cash, jewelry, cars, boats and motorcycles.

A total of 51,500 people bought tickets for $100 each or three for $250. Despite Chaput's windfall, she has no plans to quit her job, saying she loves what she does.
