The City of Winnipeg provided more detail Thursday on a massive retail development planned for south Winnipeg to be anchored by a new Ikea store.

A report published by the city said that when the entire project is complete it will be larger than Polo Park but smaller than the Mall of America near Minneapolis.

The city expects when the development is finished that on a typical Saturday there would be more than 36,000 unique visits to the area at Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard.

Both of those routes will need to be widened and an additional 7,500 parking spots will be required.

A new Ikea store is the major tenant. That store is to open in 2011. Other businesses such as a hotel, movie theatre and other outdoor stores are expected to follow.

More details are available on the city's website which is linked to this story.
