Two teenagers have been charged for allegedly plotting to kill staff and students at two schools, a university and a church, Winnipeg police said Friday.

Police allege the teens intended to target the University of Manitoba, Fort Richmond Collegiate, the Church of the Rock and a collegiate located in southeastern community of Lorette.

The girl and boy, both 17, face four counts of conspiracy to commit murder, numerous firearms offences and four counts of break and enter.

Winnipeg police Const. Jacqueline Chaput said the duo was past the planning stage and were going to use four rifles and ammunition to attack the four locations.

She alleged the teens' plan was to kill at random as many people as possible, including students, adults, church parishioners and "pretty much anyone who was going to get in their way."

One of the accused was a former student at a targeted school.

The two teens allegedly stole firearms from a house in Portage la Prairie last November. The weapons were later found at a residence in Winnipeg's Waverley Heights neighbourhood.

Boy attended services: pastor

The male was first arrested last Friday in connection with the theft but later released. He was re-arrested this Friday after police learned of the alleged plot, and the female was taken into custody Thursday.

Church of the Rock Pastor Mark Hughes told CBC News the church's youth leaders described the boy, who attended services at the church, as "a little bit mysterious."

"They did tell me he was a kind of a dark, kind of a brooding individual," Hughes said.

Both suspects are being held at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

Police said they don't believe anyone else was involved in the alleged plot.
