Winnipeg police are looking for five people who attacked passengers and a driver of a Winnipeg Transit bus Saturday.

Police said a group of five people got on an eastbound Ellice Avenue bus near Wall Street about 11 p.m. Saturday and demanded cash from two males, aged 16 and 38, who were assaulted in the rear of the bus. Police said the men were punched in the attempted robbery.

The bus driver told the group to stop and they turned on him — also demanding money.

The other two victims were unhurt and the attackers fled the bus, police said. The driver was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

Police released descriptions of three of the five assailants — two aboriginal men and a woman — and ask anyone with information to contact the Winnipeg Police Service.

Officials announced two weeks ago that all 535 Winnipeg transit buses will be equipped with surveillance cameras by the end of 2009.

Police said the question of whether the bus had security cameras is part of their investigation.
