Manitoba RCMP have charged one of their officers with sexual exploitation and the forcible confinement of a 17-year-old girl.

The police force said in a news release that an allegation was made in August, involving a girl on the Bloodvein First Nation northeast of Winnipeg.

RCMP said that in October, the force turned the results of an investigation to Manitoba Justice for a legal opinion.

That opinion was returned on Tuesday and police said a 24-year-old constable was arrested Wednesday.

He is charged with sexual exploitation and forcible confinement. He was released on his own recognizance, but must have no contact with the alleged victim, must stay away from Bloodvein and Berens River First Nation, and is not to possess any firearms.

The officer is to appear in court on Jan. 29 in Winnipeg.

The officer has been suspended with pay. He has been with the force for two years.
