A 23-year-old man has been found guilty of attempted murder in the 2006 shooting of two Winnipeg police officers.

Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Judge Doug Abra found Daniell Anderson guilty on one count of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm with intent to harm during a drug raid on a Winnipeg home in December 2006.

Three police officers were injured by gunshots in the raid, one of them by a stray bullet from another officer's gun.

Anderson remained on bail Wednesday following the guilty finding and is scheduled to next appear in court on Jan. 14. His defence lawyers, meantime, have said they intend to file a motion for a judicial stay of proceedings, arguing police used excessive force during the raid and arrest.

The Crown had argued Anderson should be convicted of two counts of attempted murder — that he knew police officers were in the house, but chose to fire at them with a shotgun while barricaded inside a bathroom.

Anderson's defence argued he didn't know it was a police raid — he thought the commotion was caused by intruders and was simply protecting himself and his family. Anderson also was shot during the incident.

More than four pounds of marijuana were found in the house.

Earlier, a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Police Association said the union would be watching the decision closely.

The small courtroom was packed with dozens of off-duty police officers. Dozens more were turned away because there weren't enough seats.

Winnipeg Police Association Mike Sutherland said the union was satisfied.

"I think at the end of the day, we are relieved to some degree," said Sutherland. "However, we are not out of the woods yet; we still have the motion brought forward by defence. As well, we are still waiting on sentencing, because at the end of the day, I think a strong deterrent needs to be made here in order to send the proper message."
