Manitoba MP Steven Fletcher is taking his case against Manitoba's public automobile insurer to the Supreme Court of Canada. A junior federal cabinet minister paralyzed after a car accident is taking his battle against Manitoba's public automobile insurer to the Supreme Court.
Steven Fletcher, the Conservative minister of state for democratic renewal, says the Manitoba Public Insurance Corp.'s $3,000 monthly limit doesn't allow him to lead an active life.
Fletcher, who earns almost $225,000 a year as a junior cabinet minister, claims the insurance limit doesn't even begin to cover costs for a health attendant he requires 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
An appeal court judge recently denied Fletcher — who represents Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, a mostly Winnipeg riding — the right to take his case before the Manitoba Court of Appeal.
Fletcher's Winnipeg lawyer Sidney Green said they will continue the fight to the Supreme Court of Canada. He said Fletcher is being discriminated against because of his political affiliation.
Fletcher was elected as MP in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.
