One of the police cars was involved in the pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle when they two cruisers crashed into one another, police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput said Wednesday.
The cruiser cars ended up in the parking lot of a sporting goods store, with the front end of one crushed and the back end of the other folded in the middle.
The suspected stolen vehicle fled the scene.
Four police officers were hurt, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening, said Chaput. They were taken to hospital in stable condition; one has since been released.
"In this case, our vehicles did sustain significant damage and … the collision is being treated as a very serious collision," she said. "Even if it wasn't police vehicles, a collision of this nature would have our collision analysts here."
The intersection of Wellington and St. James will be closed until at least mid-morning as police continue their investigation.
