Four Winnipeg teens are facing numerous charges after the latest episode of alleged auto thieves ramming a police vehicle.

A truck was reported stolen near Kildonan Place Shopping Centre in the city's east end around 8 p.m. Monday, police said.

About half an hour later, the truck was spotted on near Church Avenue and Hutchings Street in the Lord Selkirk neighbourhood.

Police officers tried to block the truck in a nearby parking lot, but the stolen truck rammed their vehicle.

"I'd just pulled up and these punks just rammed this unmarked cop truck there and bashed them up pretty bad," said Ike Ullberg, who stepped out of his nearby workplace at the time of the incident.

"There was a struggle and a couple of them bolted off there in a couple directions, about three or four of them."

Officers caught up to one suspect, pinning him to the ground, Ullberg said.

"I almost wanted to jump right in and help them out, that's what I wanted to do. But they had it under control, so they didn't really need any help," he said.

Officers unharmed

A total of four teenagers — three boys, aged 17, 16 and 13, and a 14-year-old girl — were arrested. One of the teens was armed with a screwdriver and had a scuffle with officers before he was detained, police allege.

The 17-year-old, believed to be the driver, is considered a chronic car thief under the province's auto-theft suppression program, Const. Blair Good said Tuesday morning. The youth has been charged with dangerous driving, possession of stolen property, driving while disqualified and several charges related to bail or sentencing violations.

The 16-year-old boy was also charged with possession of stolen property, as well as assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon and failure to comply with sentencing conditions.

The two youngest suspects were charged with possession of stolen property and failure to comply with sentencing conditions.

All of the teens are being held in custody.

The officers were not injured.
