Patrons at all Winnipeg library branches and the Pan Am Pool can now access wireless internet service inside the facilities, city officials announced Monday.

"Winnipeg needs to be, you know, in the modern age," Mayor Sam Katz said at a news conference to unveil the service.

"We need to be hip, and this is what it's all about. It's happening in other cities, and I certainly don't want us to be the last ones."

Patrons looking for online information about the City of Winnipeg's services can use the Wi-Fi service for free, but those visiting other internet sites will have to pay $3 an hour.

Patrons can also subscribe to purchase hourly, daily or monthly service plans through MTS Allstream, which is providing the service.

Public libraries also offer internet access using library computers; there is no charge for that service.

MTS already has Wi-Fi "hotspots" at more than 100 locations around Manitoba, including many Subway, Salisbury House and Robin's Donuts outlets.

The project cost the city about $23,000 for electrical and engineering work, hardware and marketing.

During last October's election campaign, Katz proposed establishing a Wi-Fi zone for the majority of downtown Winnipeg.
