A snowmobile accident near Selkirk, Man., claimed the life of a rising curling star on Sunday.

Kyle Flett, 20, was driving his snowmobile near Selkirk early Sunday afternoon when it crashed in what RCMP said was an open field.

Flett was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Selkirk Hospital, where he died.

RCMP said the snowmobile rolled several times. The incident was still being investigated on Monday.

Flett was a well-known curling skip from Petersfield, about 50 kilometres north of Winnipeg and 20 kilometres north of Selkirk.

Last year, his team made second place in the provincial junior men's curling championships. They were set to play in the upcoming championships in January.

His sister Kerri is also a competitive curler who is going to compete in the junior women's tournament.

"It's definitely a loss to the curling world, as well as to their family," Kyla Denisiuk, a spokeswoman with the Manitoba Curling Association, said Monday.

She also offered condolences to the Flett family from the association.

"At a time like this, it kind of makes curling seem a little bit secondary," she said.
