Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced Tuesday he will allow his divorce proceedings to be made public, heading off a legal challenge by two media outlets to have the documents unsealed.
Katz told reporters he will not fight a challenge by CBC News and the Winnipeg Free Press to overturn a court order that sealed all documents related to his divorce with Baillie Katz.
"I am instructing my lawyer in my family matters to consent to a court order unsealing my court documents," an emotional Katz told reporters Tuesday.
"I am putting my trust and faith in the media to respect my privacy in the interests of my children, and I remain hopeful that no publications will be made that in any way impact the lives of my children."
Sam and Baillie Katz have two daughters, aged five and one.
Baillie Katz refiled for divorce the day after Sam Katz was re-elected as mayor of Winnipeg on Oct. 25.
Sam Katz had originally filed divorce papers in 2002, but court documents showed a reconciliation was being sought.
Earlier this month, the mayor had his lawyers request a special court order that would seal the documents related to those proceedings and make them off limits to the public, in an effort to protect his children.
But when the two media outlets challenged the order, he decided to change his mind.
"I don't want to complicate this process, I want to simplify it. So that is why I've decided just to ask my lawyers to basically have the file, to ask the court to have it unsealed."
Lawyers in the case will be back in court on Dec. 13. Until then, the records remain sealed.
