Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz entered divorce proceedings with his wife Baillie, one day after being re-elected for a second term in office, court documents show.
Sam Katz had originally filed divorce papers in 2002, but court documents showed a reconciliation was being sought.
Baillie Katz was often seen with her husband during his first run for mayor in a 2004 byelection. However, she was noticeably absent during his re-election campaign.
Baillie Katz refiled the papers on Oct. 26, the day after the mayor won more than 60 per cent of votes cast in Winnipeg's civic election Wednesday.
Sam Katz said Monday he hopes to proceed through the divorce as discreetly as possible.
"Baille and I are separated. This unfortunately happens to, I guess, approximately 60,000 people a year," Katz said Monday.
"It certainly is a very personal and private matter. And because of the deep love that I have for my two daughters, I certainly intend to keep this a private and personal matter, and I certainly hope that the media will respect that."
In court documents, Baillie Katz is requesting sole custody and support for their two young girls aged five and one.
She indicated her monthly expenses are about $23,000. She has also asked the court to allow her and the children to live in their home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
A hearing date is been set for mid-November.
