A 23-year-old man was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder after a double shooting Sunday in Winnipeg's West End.

A 24-year-old man was killed and a 17-year-old boy was injured in the shooting on the 700 block of Simcoe Street, Winnipeg police said Monday. The teenager was in stable condition in hospital, recovering from a gunshot wound.

Officers were called to the scene around 12:45 p.m. Sunday. Neighbours said a woman ran out of a house asking someone to call an ambulance, saying her brother had been shot.

Police alleged the suspect and the victims got into a fight during a party. The suspect was arrested a short time after the shooting, a short distance away.

"Actually, he fled and was pursued by police," Const. Jacqueline Chaput said Monday. "We chased him and he threw the weapon away while he was being chased, and that was recovered by our K-9 unit."

Shooting 'too close to home': resident

Resident David Daly, who made the call to 911, said Monday that neighbours had made several complaints about the house where the shooting occurred, saying there was constant activity at all hours of the night.

He added police responded only once, when a fight began in the front yard.

After two years living on Simcoe Street, Daly has had enough.

"Actually, me and my wife are moving. This is a little too close to home," he said Monday.

"We have two small children and the area is starting to get very unsafe. There's hookers, and crack and all kinds of stuff down this street. It's not worth being here."
