CBC News Online is bringing live results from the Winnipeg civic election tonight, as polls across the city closed at 8 p.m. CT.

City election officials said Wednesday evening they are expecting to match the voter turnout from the last general election four years ago.

Senior election official Marc Lemoine told CBC News Wednesday night that 90,000 voters have cast ballots in 638 polling stations across the city, compared to 89,000 votes in the 2002 civic election. Lemoine expects turnout to match the 48.7 per cent turnout from 2002.

There are 450,000 registered voters in the city of Winnipeg.

Lemoine said he's seen increased voter turnout in several hotly contested wards.

"I don't have a specific breakdown for that, but certainly just looking at the numbers, it does appear that the totals are a little bit bigger for River Heights. In talking to our voting officers out there, I heard that there's been a steady stream of people. That's true also in St. Boniface, I heard," he said Wednesday afternoon.

"I think a lot of the polls are around 700 people per location in River Heights and St. Boniface, where in some of the other areas of the city, it might only be three [hundred] or 400 people per poll that have shown up so far."

CBC Radio One 990 is broadcasting live coverage of the municipal election results starting at 8 p.m. CT. As well, CBC Television will air a municipal election special at 11 p.m. CT, after The National.
