RCMP from Swan River, Man., are investigating the death of a three-year-old girl in the nearby community of Bowsman.

The death was reported to police Monday evening in the village, located about 19 km north of Swan River.

Just before 6 p.m. Monday, investigators were called to a home in Bowsman, where it was reported that the child had fallen down a set of stairs.

The girl was transported by ambulance to the Swan Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Saunders said it's too early to tell if anything criminal has occurred in this case.

"Anytime there's a sudden death outside of the norm, then we deploy all the resources that are necessary," Saunders said Tuesday.

"In this particular case, it's a three-year-old girl at the bottom of a set of steps. That may appear to be a routine investigation, but we don't have the luxury to write it off, as it were, that it was simply a fall down the steps."

The RCMP Major Crime Services and the Forensic Identification Section from Dauphin, as well as the Serious Crimes Unit from Winnipeg, are assisting with the investigation.

An autopsy will be held at the Health Sciences Centre within a couple of days.

The name of the child was not released Tuesday, pending notification of next of kin.
