Two Winnipeg men have had their vehicles impounded and face charges of street racing after police stopped two vehicles alleged to be travelling more than 165 kilometres per hour on a city street.

Police stopped the two vehicles Sunday night on the Perimeter Highway around Winnipeg, between Main and McPhillips streets in the north end of the city. The speed limit on most of the Perimeter Highway is 100 km/h.

"If you're going to drive your car over 165 km/h and race against somebody else, you have to understand that if the Winnipeg Police Service … catches you doing that, there's a substantial fine attached to that, the possibility of you losing your licence [and] your car is going to be impounded," said police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Dennison.

If convicted, the fine for travelling 65 kilometres over the speed limit is more than $500.

Dennison said while street racers and "cruisers" used to be found mainly on one or two main drags, they now appear to be branching out — and police are following.

"The traffic enforcement of cruise nights is starting to move around the city a lot more. They're not just concentrating on one specific area any longer," Dennison said Tuesday.

Police said city officers have handed out more than 270 traffic offence notices since May on "cruise nights" — generally Sunday nights with good weather, when car enthusiasts show off their vehicles on city streets.
