Two RCMP officers in Dauphin, Man., had one of their weapons used against them on the weekend when a suspect managed to grab hold of a Taser.
The Mounties were investigating a report of a break-in in the western Manitoba city early Saturday morning when they found three young people in the basement of a house.
One of the teens was recognized by the officers, who believed he was breaking conditions of a court order.
While placing the suspect under arrest, officers said he "became combative.
"During the ensuing struggle with the officers, he managed to get control of the officer's Taser and then deploy it on the officers," said Const. Rob Tuff.
The suspect then fled the home, although officers managed to pepper-spray him. Police caught up with him a few blocks away.
Both officers and the teen suspect were treated for minor injuries in hospital.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Colwell said it is rare that an officer's weapon is used against him.
"Since we've obtained the Tasers in Manitoba, I'm not aware of any incident that has taken place up until this past weekend," Colwell said, noting he had heard of previous instances when a Mountie's baton had been used against an officer.
A 17-year-old is in custody facing a number of charges, including assaulting a police officer.
