Damage is estimated at over $2 million after a curling rink in Winnipeg burned down over the weekend.

The fire, which broke out just before 4 a.m. local time on Saturday, destroyed the 85-year-old Thistle Curling Club and damaged neighbouring West End homes.

"When you see it going up in flames like that, it's a shocker. You know, I knew it was all over then for our curling rink," Harvey Swain, a member of the curling club's board of directors, told CBC News.

Swain and the rest of the club leadership were to meet with an insurance agent later on Monday. They also planned to meet as a group to decide the future of the club.

Lost memories

"It was a great building," club member Rick Harlock told CBC News. "We had a lot of fun here. A lot of nice memories."

The police arson strike force is continuing its investigation into what might have caused the fire.

Meanwhile, another local curling club, the Asham Arena, has offered to let Thistle members play there while the club decides what to do next.

Swain said he was relieved that since the club had already been shut down for the season no one was injured in the fire.

"If it had to go down, this was probably the best time because there was no chance of anyone being in there," he said.
