A group that says it wants to bring the white race back to its former power failed to recruit any new members in Winnipeg on the weekend.

Western Canada For Us has been active mostly in Alberta, where they are vocal supporters of Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel. Until CBC began reporting on the organization last week, its website offered downloads of Mein Kampf and other Nazi materials.

Winnipegger Jamie Murphy hoped people interested in forming a Manitoba chapter would attend a rally this weekend in Assiniboine Park. Instead of new members, he was met by about 20 anti-racist activists and members of the media, with Winnipeg police officers hovering nearby.

Neatly dressed in polished boots, a shirt and tie and a military flight jacket, Murphy stayed cool when activists told them what they thought of him. When it was clear that no one was showing up to join his organization, he expressed his disappointment.

"I was hoping that there would be more support, but maybe Winnipeg isn't the market for it – maybe Winnipeg isn't the kind of place that embraces that kind of thing," he says.

Anti-racist activist Helmut-Harry Loewen says things couldn't have turned out better.

"I'm very happy that very little support has been shown for Jamie Murphy and this Western Canada For Us organization here," he says.

Murphy maintains that he is interested only in promoting white pride, and not interested in promoting racial hatred.
