A woman who was brushing snow off her vehicle in Winnipeg early Wednesday morning was stabbed by a man who drove off in her car, but not before she managed to get her young daughter out of the vehicle.

Police said Parmjeet Kaur, 30, brought her seven-year-old daughter, Komalpreet, out to the car on Marbury Road in West Kildonan around 6 a.m.

Kaur was dusting snow off the vehicle when a man she didn't know came up to her and demanded her keys.

“My mom was cleaning the car, and somebody closed the car,” said Komalpreet. “I was sitting in the car.”

When Kaur refused to hand over the keys, the man revealed a knife and stabbed her in the lower body, according to police.

Komalpreet said she was watching what was happening out of the side window and was scared for her mom.

Kaur managed to get her daughter out of the car before the man drove off.

Surinder Mallhi, a relative who lives in the same home as Kaur, recounted to CBC News the story he was told by Kaur.

He said the man pushed Kaur to the ground and then stabbed her in the leg.

“She gave him the key and then he started the car, and then she said, ‘My baby’s inside the car!’” he said.

Mallhi said the man let her take her child out of the car, but she couldn’t get back into her home because her house keys were on the same key ring as her car keys.

Kaur was on her way to drop Komalpreet off at daycare before heading to work at a local cleaning company.

Kaur returned to work the next day, despite requiring stitches for the wound on her leg. Mallhi said Kaur is “scared, but she’s OK.”

The family is surprised the carjacking happened in their neighbourhood.

“It’s very quiet. It’s nice here, but I don’t know,” he said. “I hope police catch him.”

Police are now looking for a suspect in the case. The man who attacked Kaur was wearing a white jacket and may be driving the woman's 1998 green four-door Honda Accord. The vehicle has the licence plate GMX 393.
