An independent probe will examine the death of a 39-year-old northern Manitoba woman who was in RCMP custody when she fell ill, according to police.
RCMP say the woman, who was from Shamattawa, Man., became ill while she was in police custody on Sept. 3.
The woman was transported to a hospital in Winnipeg, where she died on Sept. 7.
Police are now waiting for autopsy results, RCMP said in a release Tuesday.
The woman's name was not released.
While the woman died in hospital, police say RCMP policy requires an independent investigation to be launched when someone dies while in custody.
The Saskatoon Police Service has assigned an investigator to look into the case, according to police.
Shamattawa is located about 750 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.
