RCMP reveal headshop raids tied to copyright investigation
Range of products seized from three The Joint locations in Winnipeg
RCMP have seized a number of smoking products from three Winnipeg head shops as part of a copyright infringement investigation.
Officers raided The Joint on St. Mary’s Road Wednesday morning, as well as the store’s two other Winnipeg locations on Pembina Highway and Marion Street.
Two employees were arrested in the raids, and boxes of merchandise were seized from the businesses.
On Thursday, officers revealed the raids and seizures were part of an ongoing copyright investigation.
RCMP said many of the items seized had images that replicated copyright-protected images.
Officers displayed the items seized, some bearing the Angry Birds logo, Looney Tunes logos, Hanna-Barbera logos and Nintendo logos.
No formal charges in relation to the seizures have been laid, but one male employee was arrested during the raids and is facing charges of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, according to RCMP.
