Parents on waiting lists for a space in their local child care centre may soon be in luck.
The province announced Wednesday it is creating 1,000 new child care spaces over the next year.
The new spaces will open in 26 centres across the province.
Provincial officials announced they are investing $5 million in building or expanding child care centres this year.
The provincial government is also taking steps to retain and recruit more early childhood educators.
Sherri Vandal, site manager at the Morrow Avenue Child Care Centre where the announcement was made, said the spaces are sorely needed.
"It's a reality that parents are on waiting lists for child care spaces for up to two years," she said.
Vandal said more spaces are still desperately needed.
