Manitoba Hydro crews have restored power in parts of downtown Winnipeg and the West End that were hit by an outage late Thursday afternoon.

The outage began at 4:15 p.m. CT Thursday and affected the area between Ellice and St. Mary avenues and Langside and Carlton streets.

Nineteen major Hydro customers were without electricity as a result, including Portage Place Shopping Centre, the University of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Holiday Inn hotel.

Power was restored at about 7:40 p.m., Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider told CBC News.

Schneider said the problem appears to be with two underground feeder cables, so crews have transferred the power load to a spare cable while they test the faulted cables to determine what happened.
