A 53-year-old man involved in a crash near downtown Winnipeg on Monday has died.

The crash happened at about noon Monday in the eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue, between Young Street and Langside Street.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died Monday night, police said.

The investigation found the car was going west on Portage and as it approached Young, it swerved left and caused the driver to lose control.

The car spun into the eastbound lanes, facing oncoming traffic and was struck on the driver’s side door by an SUV.

Another vehicle in the eastbound lanes was also involved but the driver was not hurt.

Portage was closed in both directions between Langside and Good Street as investigators spent the afternoon taking photos and measurements at the scene.

Police said alchohol was not a factor in the crash.
