Police Taser man who allegedly crashed stolen car into tree
An 18-year-old Winnipeg man is facing numerous charges after allegedly crashing a stolen vehicle into a tree and confronting police in St. Vital.
Officers noticed a vehicle being driven erratically near St. Anne's Road and Crystal Avenue and tried to initiate a traffic stop at about 8:15 a.m. Saturday.
When the driver did not stop officers looked up the vehicle and realized it had been reported stolen the previous day.
A short time later the driver of the vehicle lost control and crashed into a tree, police said.
The driver ran from the vehicle and was chased by officers. He eventually stopped and confronted police in an aggressive way, police said.
Officers used a Taser to stop the man, but were unsuccessful. Police eventually got the suspect under control and arrested him.
The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition to be treated for the injuries he suffered in the crash.
He faces several charges including driving while being impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault of a peace officer and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.
