Police charge man after Winnipeg carjacking
Elderly couple assaulted by suspect until he got hold of car keys, police say
A 20-year-old man is facing numerous charges after an elderly couple was carjacked Thursday evening.
Police said the incident happened in the 1100 block of Portage Avenue when the couple exited a restaurant and began walking toward their parked vehicle.
The couple, both in their 60's, was confronted by a drunk man who demanded they hand over their car keys, police said.
The suspect physically assaulted the couple and when witnesses tried to help he threatened to hurt them as well.
He eventually got hold of the keys and took off in the couple's car.
Police soon spotted the suspect on the road and tried to pull him over. That's when the suspect rammed into a police cruiser and another vehicle.
Officers took the man into custody and have charged him with several offences including assault, uttering threats, driving while ability impaired, flight while pursued by peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The couple did not sustain any major injuries from the incident.
