Drivers in Winnipeg will have to dig for more change starting today, as the city has doubled the parking rates at some meters.

The hourly rates are now $2 in the downtown and Exchange District.

The goal is to create more turnover with street parking and encourage drivers to use parking lots more frequently. Drivers will also have to pay to park until 8 p.m. Free parking used to kick in at 6 p.m.

However, there might be some headaches as not all parking meters have been recalibrated to accept new $1 and $2 coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint earlier this year.

The city is working on adjusting all of the machines.
