'Parking protected' bike lane coming to Sherbrook Street
Section of new bike route will separate cyclists from vehicles with lane of parked cars
A cycling lane that will be built on Sherbrook Street this year will include Winnipeg's first "parking protected" bike lane.
The City of Winnipeg announced Wednesday it will build a dedicated bike lane this summer on Sherbrook northbound between the Maryland Bridge and Cumberland Avenue.
Part of that route, between Wolseley Avenue and Broadway, will be parking protected, meaning it will separate cyclists from vehicle traffic by putting the lane between the sidewalk and parked cars.
The route from Broadway to Cumberland will be a "buffered" bike lane, meaning it will be a curbside lane that has two painted lines on the roadway to separate bikes from vehicles.
The new northbound route will complement the southbound bike lane that was built on Maryland Street in 2010, according to the city.
The city added that it will upgrade bus stops along Sherbrook to reduce possible conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists.
