Officer beaten while trying to stop assault on woman
A 26-year-old man is charged with several counts of assault after three people, including an off-duty police officer, were hurt at a Winnipeg convenience store.
It happened shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday at a 7-Eleven store on Henderson Highway at Sutton Avenue — across the street from a police community station.
Emergency crews who were called to the scene of an assault found a woman and two men — one of whom was the officer — injured and the suspect no longer there.
The 52-year-old officer was transported to hospital in stable condition while the two other victims did not require medical attention, police said.
The officer, who was on his way to work at the community station, saw the woman being assaulted by the suspect outside of the store.
He went over, identified himself as a police officer, and tried to intervene but the suspect began beating the officer instead, police said.
A bystander then attempted to assist the officer, but was also attacked.
All three victims were able to get into the store and the suspect fled the scene, police said.
He was located a short time later in the 300 block of Sutton and taken into custody.
He has been detained in custody at the Provincial Remand Centre.
