Northern Manitoba community calls for upgrades to water system
York Factory First Nation to continue using bottled water despite Health Canada OK
A Northern Manitoba community has been given the OK to use water in their community – but they say they’ll still be using bottled water instead.
The town of York Landing dealt with weeks of water issues, being told by Health Canada not to consume the water in the area.
On Friday,Health Canada said signs indicating the water wasn't safe to consume could be replaced with signs saying the tap water was now safe.
But the First Nation’s chief, Louisa Constant, isn’t so sure.
She said the water remains cloudy and has a strange taste.
Constant said her community of about 500 people will continue to use bottle water for drinking until the entire water system in the area is flushed.
Constant also said the water problems highlight the need for upgrades to the operation of the water system.
