The muggy weather didn't dampen the lineup for teddy bears needing repairs.

The annual Teddy Bears' Picnic for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba kicked off Sunday on soggy ground under grey skies at Assiniboine Park.

The CBC's Nelly Gonzalez said it was surprisingly busy at the park, with hundreds of people lined up to get into the tents.

Kids and parents sported raincoats and boots instead of sunblock and summer hats.

Mimi Girouard, who was there with her 10 grandchildren, said she hasn't missed a Teddy Bears' Picnic for as long as she can remember.

"It's a nice get together, lots of activities for the kids and not too many people do activities with their kids anymore, so it's like a family. I just love it!" she said.

There are more than 50 tents this year including the usual 'triage' centre where kids get medical attention or patches for their stuffed animals.

Proceeds will  go to the Children's Hospital Foundation.

The annual event attracts hundreds of children looking for care for their stuffed companions. (cbc)
