Mondragon Bookstore and Coffee House is closing its doors forever this week.

The well-known co-op became a hub for activism in the Exchange District over the last 18 years, but now has only five members left to run it.

In previous years, the co-op had dozens of members.

“I don’t know how it could be replaced,” said customer Paul Graham. “The people who’ve worked there over the years have provided a real service to the community, and I don’t see anyone stepping up to fill the gap.”

The coffee shop offers vegan food and hard-to-find books.

“It’s a place where over the almost 20 years, people have come together for book launches, meetings and socials – one of those places that really doesn’t have a counterpart in Winnipeg.”

Mondragon will officially close its doors on Friday.
