A 52-year-old Melita man has died after the fuel tanker he was driving overturned, just south of the community on Highway 83.

RCMP said some of the 15,000 litres of diesel the tanker was hauling have leaked out and efforts are being made to contain the fuel.

Fire and emergency crews were dispatched to the single vehicle accident near Elva shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.

The driver, whose name is not being released, was taken to Melita Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
