City officials are blaming a watermain break for causing a massive sinkhole in Winnipeg’s Garden City neighbourhood this weekend.

A huge chunk of pavement caved in on itself around 1 p.m. Sunday at Airlies Street and Ashbury Bay.

Police taped off the area, and crews have been on scene working to determine what caused the hole since it was found.

City officials said they thought the hole was caused by a watermain break.

In the meantime, homes in the area are without water. A water truck has been called in to provide temporary access to it.

Crews said they won’t be able to repair the hole or restore water to residents until the watermain is fixed. City officials hope to have the break fixed by Monday evening.
