Marijuana grow operation found at house fire
Emergency crews working on a fire at a home on Leaman Crescent Friday afternoon discovered a marijuana grow operation on the premises, police in Winnipeg say.
According to police, a 911 call was made around 1:30 p.m. CT.
Fire crews immediately notified police about what they saw inside the home.
Investigators said they then obtained a search warrant and seized a number of items related to growing marijuana, including:
- 878 cannabis marijuana plants, worth an estimated $972,000.
- Grow operation equipment, worth around $15,000.
Police noted the home's water and power system had been rigged to bypass utility meters.
No one was injured in the fire and there was no immediate word on the extent of damage to the home or how it started.
Police said they had not made any arrests related to the alleged illicit activity taking place, but their Green Team and arson strike force were continuing to investigate.
