Canada Safeway workers in Manitoba are willing to hit the picket line.

Members voted 99.7 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on Sunday night.

UFCW Local 832 stated on its website it was almost a record turnout for the vote, which was held in six locations across the province.

"We had standing room only at the Winnipeg meeting. Members are very interested in these talks because of the recent purchase of their stores by Sobeys and Federated Co-op," said UFCW Local 832 president Jeff Traeger.

The current collective agreement expires March 15, with two more weeks of talks scheduled between the union and management.

The strike mandate means that if talks fail to result in a new agreement, union members are ready to strike.
