Manitoba businesses are giving a warm welcome to the higher temperatures this weekend. Stony Mountain Ski Area was in high gear Saturday, with owner Heather Dewar anticipating a busy day.
"I think everyone's got a bit of cabin fever," she said. "We know that a lot of moms and dads are wanting to get (their children) outside to burn off some energy and that's where we look forward to probably some record crowds this coming weekend."
Dewar said business was down for most ski operators between 30 and 40 per cent due to the recent cold snap.
"We were closed six days over the holidays, which is like three weekends," she said. "It's almost like losing - if you're a summer business - half your summer."
It was an unprecedented hit, one she's glad is over for now. "Us in the ski industry, we're pretty resilient, but we've never been closed so many days in our 25 years of operating as we were during our Christmas vacation."
