Manitoba marriage proposal goes viral after dancing groom brings future bride to tears
Ivan Flett spent the weekend rehearsing a special dance for his proposal to his girlfriend, Reanna Taylor
A unique marriage proposal captured on video in St. Theresa Point, Man., has gone viral with tens of thousands of views on Facebook the day after the dancing groom popped the question.
Ivan Flett, 19, decided to propose to his childhood sweetheart, Reanna Taylor, 18, in a flash-mob-style dance performance at a family barbecue Tuesday.
Family and friends had gathered to celebrate Flett's older sister's six-year wedding anniversary, which is also the six-year anniversary of when the newly engaged couple first became official when they were just 12 and 13 years old.
"I just wanted to make something really creative, and something meaningful something that we will remember for the rest of our lives," said Flett over the phone from the community, which is 460 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
"I only had one shot to propose to her and I wanted to make it somewhat big and memorable and I'm going to remember this for the rest of my life."
Flett's family and friends spent about 18 hours practising over the weekend. The dance, set to the Bruno Mars hit Marry You, was choreographed by the group themselves.
All nine dancers have backgrounds in dancing, with nearly all of them taking part in a program called Outside Looking In (OLI), a high school dance program for Indigenous youth.
Flett says Taylor didn't know what was coming when they started dancing.
"The first half she didn't know what was going on so you can clearly see her in the video just minding her own business while eating," said Flett.
"She thought it was just one of those OLI dances … until she saw my little sister jump in, that's when she realized something was up because normally I don't dance with my little sister.
"She was trying to hold back tears … I'll never forget the look on her face when I pulled the ring."
'I couldn't think'
Taylor says she was overcome by emotion when Flett took to one knee and it became clear what was happening.
"I couldn't think," she said over Skype Wednesday.
But she says she knew exactly what her answer would be — she said yes — although it took a few minutes because she was crying.
Flett says he wasn't worried when he saw his bride-to-be crying for so long.
"I've been with Reanna for six years now, she is really emotional," he said.
"She has a big heart. When something emotional happens she likes to let it out."
Video of the proposal was posted to Facebook where it quickly began being shared. The couple says they can't believe the attention it's gotten.
"I thought it would only be [shared] in the community we live in, but next thing you know, two hours later, this thing had gone viral," said Flett. "Words can't describe how I'm feeling right now.
"But I'm glad so many people know how much love I have for Reanna."
The couple, who both work in health care in St Theresa Point, haven't set a wedding date yet.
The proposal was captured by cell phone video from Robyn Taylor and Tammy Flett, which CBC has edited for length.
