A man from La Salle, Man. has been charged with aggravated assault after his ten-week-old daughter was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 39-year-old man is the infant's adoptive father, RCMP said.

The baby was taken to hospital in May with injuries consistent with child abuse.

"This is a tough one and it's hard to hear of these things happening,” said Tara Seel, an RCMP spokesperson. “This is a ten-week-old girl and as vulnerable as she is and that she was harmed in anyway is just heart-breaking."

Seel said the little girl's condition has since stabilized but it's not known what long-term effect the injuries will have.

She said the case has been hard on investigators.

"They go in and they do these investigations and they do them fully and completely, but they are also human beings. you know when you see something like this it is hard for people to digest that, especially if they are parents themselves."

The child is now in the care of Child and Family Services. There were no other children in the home, said Seel.

The suspect is also charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.

He has been released on a promise to appear in court.
