Manitoba Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard is calling for an independent review of this year's flooding.

Gerrard says outside experts need to be brought in to examine what went wrong and how future floods can be mitigated.

Gerrard says the government failed to protect communities including Brandon, Lake St. Martin and others along Lake Winnipeg.

He says bigger dikes, better forecasting and more dams could have made this year's flood less of a disaster.

The Liberal leader was joined by residents of Twin Lake Beach, who say they are still struggling to be compensated for their losses and to get their properties back to normal.

Heavy rainfall last spring swelled rivers, forcing thousands from their homes and causing an estimated $815 million in damage.
