A Winnipeg man was able to pull his girlfriend and another woman to safety from a house fire on Home Street Friday afternoon.

Flames broke out around 3:45 p.m. CT.

Gilbert Pronteau said he helped get his girlfriend Anita Duck to safety as the home filled with smoke.

The woman was disoriented due to the conditions inside but Pronteau managed to get her to the front lawn and return for another person inside who was also brought to safety.

By the time fire crews arrived on the scene the house was full of smoke and flames.

Crews made an initial attempt to enter the home, however the heat was so intense they had to back off  and get the flames under control from the exterior.

Pronteau and Duck lost everything they had to the fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage. Two cats are also missing.
