Winnipeg police are investigating the city's fourth homicide of the year.

Nigel Dixon, 20, has been identified as the man who was shot Tuesday afternoon on Langside Street.

A woman was also shot and rushed to hospital in critical condition. She is now listed in stable condition.

Multiple cruiser cars, ambulances and the Winnipeg Police Service K-9 unit rushed to the 500 block of Langside Street near Sargent Avenue in the city's West End at about 5 p.m.

"At this time, it does appear that these people were the unfortunate victims of an unavoidable incident," said Const. Eric Hofley.

Officers taped off a large area and were seen going into several yards with dogs.

Police said the victims were not known to police, and the shooting is not believed to be gang related.

Investigators remained on scene investigating Wednesday afternoon, going door to door interviewing neighbours.

Helga Toews' home is still cordoned off with police tape.

She said she’s not surprised.

"Well, it’s happened before. It’s part of the territory, right?"

She said the news that it could have been a random shooting is troubling, though.

"It could’ve been me because I walked out my front door and off to mail a letter and coming back, there’s all this yellow tape," said Toews.

No arrests had been made at that point.
