Winnipeg police have confirmed one man has died and two other people are injured after a stabbing at a St. James apartment building Friday night.

Emergency crews were called to the 2100 block of Portage Avenue just after 9 p.m.

Three people had been attacked — two men and a woman, police said.

A 39-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition with upper body wounds. He died a short time later. His name has not been released.

A 32-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man were taken to hospital in stable condition.

Officers have not released any details on what led to the stabbings.

Tom Barz lives in the building and told CBC News with all the emergency lights outside he thought it was a fire and went to check what was happening.

"I left the building and I went around the front and I could see blood all over the front…and there was a young lady over here on the corner and she was down," said Barz.

Investigators are interviewing a number of people, but there is no word about arrests.
